4th Positive Birth Conference 2020

It is with great joy and enthusiasm that GIMNOGRAVIDA presents the fourth edition of NASCER POSITIVO® (POSITIVE BIRTH), where we hope to gather health professionals from all over the world in a meeting that promises to enrich all of us with research, sharing, communication, art and emotion.

Our team helps couples to know, feel, and believe in their potential to create a new life with health and harmony, during pregnancy, at birth, and on the challenging course of growth. We believe that the path to balance and health is through self-awareness, empowerment and person-centered models of care. This is what we offer to families and want to disseminate among health professionals and has been the inspiration for NASCER POSITIVO® project.

Both the success of the previous editions as the will to continue to plant seeds of change were our motivation and ambition to give shape to this IV International Meeting of New Paradigms at Birth, to be held on 2nd, 3rd and 4th April 2020.

Join us to reflect on the current experiences of birth in Portugal and in the World, meet projects that aim to promote good practices and experiences in childbirth/parenting, share your knowledge and practice and discuss some controversial themes, with scientific basis and without prejudice. We are looking forward to welcoming Linda, who will be speaking at the 2020 conference and running a workshop for interested midwives.

2019 Normal Birth

Childbirth Essentials was invited to speak at the third international meeting on New Birth Paradigms in Porto in mid March 2019. Mary McNabb attended and presented the Programme for Childbirth Essentials.

The conference in Porto was attended by 250 professionals, mainly nurse-midwives, paediatric nurses, doulas from hospitals and community practices in Portugal. Extending over three days, this event brought together a wide diversity of interrelated perspectives and approaches to the needs, rights and desires of mothers, fathers and their families, from conception through pregnancy, labour, suckling-lactation and beyond.

Since the first meeting was organised in 2017 by an inspired group of local practitioners, http://www.gimnogravida.pt/en/ successive meetings have begun to create a coherent framework around the search for relevant cultural, biological, psychosocial, paradigms to promote normal birth and parental vitality in Portugal.

National and international speakers presented their own projects and these were followed by related workshops, where participants divided into smaller groups for master classes from expert practitioners, to facilitate practice based learning.

I gave an overview of the pregnancy-birth phase of the LK Massage Programme® in the opening plenary session.

Drawing on the evidence-based practice of this phase used in the UK and Hong Kong, the presentation outlined the science underpinning the of use of specific massage, breathing and visualisation techniques of the Programme. These complement maternal-fetal-paternal neuro-hormonal and circadian physiological adaptations from 30 weeks’ gestation, until maternal-infant sensory interactions following birth.

The content of the presentation resonated with local professional efforts to de-medicalise birthing experiences for healthy women and families.

There has been interest in running some courses in Portugal in the future, which we are very much looking forward to.
