Current evidence suggests that the pregnancy-birth phase of the Programme needs to begin at around 30 weeks of gestation, for low risk women who do not experience regular nocturnal sleep cycles of 7-8 hours duration at this time. This point in the fertile cycle coincides with the onset of nocturnal uterine activation. For women who already enjoy this pattern of sleep at 30 weeks’ the pregnancy-birth phase of the Programme can begin at 36 weeks’ to coincide with the rise in maternal pain threshold.

To implement the Programme from 30 weeks’ this course has been designed exclusively for midwives working with women during pregnancy, since their remit of practice enables them to identify low risk women who do not experience regular nocturnal sleep cycles of 7-8 hours duration at 30 weeks’ gestation.

2023: Unfortunately, we are not doing face to face courses at this time, but are currently developing online courses that will be available in the near future.

Course Information (5 Subjects)

  • 1. Location
  • 2. Objectives
This course will enable participants to: learn the basics of massage and touch develop a basic understanding of central and systemic responses to massage from 30-36 weeks’ gestation . understand how the pregnancy-birth phase of the LK Massage Programme complements maternal-fetal and paternal adaptations to fertility, and the regulation of maternal-fetal circadian physiology from late pregnancy to the first hours following birth understand the importance of a conducive physical environment to optimise effects of practice demonstrate competence when performing massage techniques complementing parental adaptations to the fertile cycle
  • 3. Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the course participants will: demonstrate the principles of massage, touch and body movement through practice understand maternal systemic and emotional adaptations to pregnancy use current research to appreciate the relationship between regular massage, reduced anxiety, sleep and increased pain threshold, in late pregnancy understand the design of the pregnancy-birth phase of the LK Massage Programme, as an intervention to complement maternal-fetal and paternal adaptations to fertility, and maternal-fetal circadian physiology from late pregnancy to the first hours following birth.
  • 4. Teaching and Learning Activities
Information giving will be interspersed with dialogue and practice to facilitate reflection and learning from experience. Teaching and learning activities will include micro lectures, discussion, and use of audio visual, guided practice and directed reading.
  • 5. Assessment
Competence to: identify a woman at low risk of developing medical complications; provide evidence based information and use of selected elements of the first phase of the Programme will be assessed by a report on the effects on sleep quality and duration achieved by a low risk woman with sleep problems, who practised selected techniques of the Programme between 30 and 36 weeks’ gestation. The report needs to be submitted within four months of the course. Following successful completion of the report, students will be awarded a certificate
